This full gut renovation of an existing corner lot house in downtown Toronto, was designed by Martin Kohn from KOHN SHNIER Architects. It included the relocation of the main house entry to the side of the house, where the building takes on a bar bell layout.
With the side entry at the midpoint of the house length, the rear portion of the ground floor was lowered. This allowed for a 10' ceiling height in the kitchen which overlooks the backyard. The side of the garage was dismantled, and the salvaged bricks were used to reconfigure the side facade, creating a modern facade from a 70's structure. The dismantled garage wall was left open leaving a sheltered sitting area which faces the rear garden.
